چکیده

This project documents some initial results of our investigation of the applicability of adaptation techniques and procedures for use in speech synthesis systems – a process whereby a welltrained synthesizer can be transformed to sound "more like" a small target recording set. If we can ensure that the target data set is representative not of an individual speaker, but of a category of accented speech, adaptation of the Synthesis system could be expressed as an iterative procedure where the System learns to modify both its spoken output and linguistic representation to more closely resemble the alternate accent. We summarize the proposed algorithm and present results estimating the rate of pronunciation-learning and generalization possible with this technique, specifically as regards the choice of an appropriately-sized target speech database for training.

Rapid Adaptation of Foreign-Accented HMM-Based Speech Synthesis

This paper presents findings of listeners’ perception of speaker identity in synthetic speech. Specifically, we investigated what the effect is on the perceived identity of a speaker when using differently accented average voice models and limited amounts (five and fifteen sentences) of a speaker’s data to create the synthetic stimuli. A speaker discrimination task was used to measure speaker i...

Improving ASR performance on non-native speech using multilingual and crosslingual information

This paper presents our latest investigation of automatic speech recognition (ASR) on non-native speech. We first report on a non-native speech corpus an extension of the GlobalPhone database which contains English with Bulgarian, Chinese, German and Indian accent and German with Chinese accent. In this case, English is the spoken language (L2) and Bulgarian, Chinese, German and Indian are the ...

A keyvowel approach to the synthesis of regional accents of English

Most English text-to-speech synthesisers offer one of only two accents: General American or RP. Developing a new accent is laborious, since it is not possible to choose one accent as a base form and systematically translate to others. We use the approach of Wells ([1]), categorising vowels in terms of abstract keywords that encode classes of words. Thus it is unnecessary to use a phonemic trans...

Analysis, modelling and synthesis of formants of British, American and Australian accents

The formant space of three major English accents namely British, American and Australian are modelled and used for accent conversion. Accent synthesis, through modification of the acoustic parameters of speech, provides a means for assessing the perceptual contribution of each parameter on conveying an accent. An improved method based on a linear prediction (LP) model feature analysis and a 2-D...

Text-to-speech synthesis for welsh and welsh English

English sounds that had no equivalent in Welsh (equivalences derived from [4]). These three segments were: / /, / /, and / /. Tables 1 and 2 show the South Welsh phonemes, with their equivalents in RP and the extra English segments. This work represents the first known attempt to develop a text-to-speech synthesiser for Welsh. A list of pseudo-Welsh nonsense words was generated, allowing for ce...
